Tsai Pei-Yi

Born in 1994 in Taipei, Taiwan, Tsai Pei-Yi graduated with a Master’s degree from the Department of Fine Arts at the National Taiwan Normal University, specializing in Western painting. Since 2019, she has focused on depicting themes related to war. Initially, her works were filled with well-known historical images of war, but later, she concentrated on the military diaries written by her maternal grandfather as the subject of her research. She records the images and text from his diaries using painting to document them.

The works exhibited this time are themed around her grandfather’s military diary and the post-war civilian life, attempting to explore the impact of war and history on contemporary thought. By using oil paints to recolor old historical images and adding imaginative spaces and objects, as well as child-like flat color block doodles, she creates a canvas where conflict and contradiction coexist.
