1922 生於日本，伊賀。
2011辭世於日本，兵庫縣，神戶市。
日本「具體美術協會」一員。不同於當時在日本戰後盛行的超現實主義與存在主義的畫風，在60年代元永定正在美國所創作的抽象繪畫色彩變得明亮並帶有圓形組合;他把自己幽默的稱為「傻瓜派」，把自己的作品叫做「滑稽藝術」。
作品有種原始胚胎般的形狀，以及類似卡通的形式，像是漂浮在空中的氣泡。畫中隱匿著他對兒童藝術和日本漫畫的濃厚意趣，畫面平衡，新鮮又具有玩味。
1955年獲邀加入具體派，成為具體派代表藝術家，其作品多次在MoMA、現代藝術博物館、蓬皮杜中心和廣島市現代美術館等知名機構展出。相比具體派其他成員，元永的作品包含更多新鮮幽默的元素（fresh, jubilant, and playful.）
